Northwest Film Forum (NWFF) has partnered with the Warhol Foundation’s Regional Re-granting Program as its Seattle-region grantmaker to administer emergency relief and short-term financial assistance for independent artists impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic through the Northwest Film Forum’s Collective Power Fund.

The Collective Power Fund will distribute $500 unrestricted, one-time grants to 140 artists, awarding a total of $70,000 in funding.

» TIMELINE

The application opens Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at 12:00 PM PST and closes Monday, November 30, 2020, at 11:59 PM PST. This deadline is firm. To respect applicants who submitted by the deadline, late applications will not be accepted.

Applicants will be notified of decisions by early December and funds will be issued by mid-December 2020, via check, PayPal, or direct deposit.

» FINANCIAL CRITERIA

The Collective Power Fund is for visual artists (see below for eligible disciplines) in King County experiencing financial distress. Applicants can use the three examples below to help categorize their financial situation. Priority considerations will be for communities that are impacted disproportionately due to COVID-19, including: BIPOC, LGBTQ2SIA+, gender non-conforming, non-binary, femme, women, d/Deaf and/or disabled.

[ Financial Strain ] – The loss of income impacts my ability to continue my current lifestyle; I am unable to purchase items necessary for my business/creative pursuits.

[ Financial Distress ] – I will have to dip into limited savings; I may not be able to pay all my bills.

[ Severe Financial Distress ] – I have limited to no savings; I am unable to cover basic needs such as food and rent; I am financially responsible for family members.

NOTE: Those who are currently financially stable (able to pay rent, buy food, etc.) are respectfully encouraged to refrain from applying at this time.

» ELIGIBLE TO APPLY

  • Applicant must be an individual artist grounded in the visual arts* who has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic by either from been laid off, furloughed, or their contract, freelance, or commissions work reduced
  • Applicant must be a resident of either incorporated or unincorporated King County
  • Applicant must be able to demonstrate an active artistic practice
  • [ Eligible disciplines ]: work grounded in craft, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation, as well as film, video, new media, sound art, performance art, and social practice

» NOT ELIGIBLE TO APPLY

  • Applicant whose practices are NOT grounded in the visual arts or presented within a visual art context
  • Applicants applying under an artist team, non-profit, fiscal sponsorship, or an organization
  • Applicant who has a steady, sustainable income not impacted by COVID-19 pandemic
  • Applicant seeking project-based grants
  • [ Ineligible disciplines ]: work grounded solely in dance, theater, music, or industry / feature filmmaking

» APPLICATION TIP

  • Applicants should create and save your application answers in a separate word processing document (outside of this Google Form) so that content isn’t lost due to possible technical hiccups. When applicants are ready to submit their application, copy and paste answers from saved document into the Google Form fields.

» APPLICATION MATERIALS

Applicants will need to provide the following information:

• Statement as an Artist (max 3,000 characters)
• Statement of Need (max 1,500 characters)
• Artist Résumé or CV (max 3 pages; optional)
• Artist website, social media account, or press coverage (max 3 links; optional)

Also, to be eligible, applicants must be able to answer “Yes” to the statements listed below:

  • I am 21 years of age or older;
  • I am experiencing financial emergencies due to the COVID-19 pandemic;
  • I am a self-identified visual artist* residing in King County (incorporated or unincorporated);
  • I am an active artist/arts-based cultural organizer able to demonstrate a sustained commitment to my practice, career, and a public audience;
  • I can provide a W9 and Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)**;

** This information will not be asked for until after the grant has been awarded.

» IMPORTANT GRANT DETAILS

  • Due to limited funding and high demand, only a small percentage of those who apply will receive a grant
  • Selection process will be done via lottery, with priority considerations taken into account
  • Unrestricted grant will be offered in the amount of $500

As an applicant, your data will be viewed by members of the Northwest Film Forum team. Individual applicant data (including name) will not be shared, duplicated, or distributed publicly. Aggregated applicant data from all applications collected may be shared in summary reports to funders and/or the public, but will not disclose any personal information.

» WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF VISUAL ART OR VISUAL ARTIST?
NWFF is using an expansive definition of visual art practice to include drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation, as well as, film/video, new media, sound art, performance art, and social practice. Artists whose practices are firmly rooted in dance, theatre, music, or industry/feature filmmaking are not eligible to apply.

» WHY IS THE FUNDING EXCLUSIVE TO VISUAL ARTISTS?
The Collective Power Fund is part of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts’ Regional Re-granting Network, which exclusively serves visual artists, in line with its founding mission.

» WILL GRANT RECIPIENT NAMES BE PUBLICIZED?
No, all awardees’ names will be kept confidential and will not be publicized by Northwest Film Forum.

» WILL THERE BE ANOTHER ROUND OF APPLICATIONS OR DISTRIBUTION OF MORE FUNDS?
In 2020, we have a finite budget from the Warhol Foundation that covers grants as well as the costs of operating the program. There will be additional financial support in 2021 through The Collective Power Fund and we will announce those details in the future.
